The Recycling Lottery

The Recycling Lottery is the first lottery concept that combines environmental preservation and recycling in an exciting lottery, by allowing the refund value of bottles and cans to become a stake in a national lottery. After inserting bottles and cans into the Reverse Vending Machine (RVM), the participant may choose either to get the refund value in cash or to buy tickets in the Recycling Lottery by pressing an alternative and clearly marked button on the RVM. The RVM is connected electronically to a central gaming server, which will perform the actual drawing in real-time and instruct the RVM to print a ticket indicating whether or not the participant won a prize.

The configuration of the lottery (i.e prize and drawing schedule, stakes, types of prizes (cash/non-cash), method of communication, etc) can be configured according to the individual requirements of different jurisdictions. The Norwegian version of the Recycling Lottery is configured as a pre-drawn lottery with a minimum stake of NOK 0.50 and cash prizes varying from NOK 10 to NOK 2 million. Prizes up to NOK 1,000 may be cashed out in the store where the RVM is located. The lottery operates based on a permit issued by the Norwegian Gaming Board.

Following a lengthy development and application process, the Recycling Lottery was first established in Norway in 2008 for the purpose of becoming a stable and secure source of funding for charitable causes. The lottery is currently operating for the benefit of the Norwegian Red Cross, and has so far yielded more than 14,4 million Norwegian Kroner to the organization. The lottery is owned and operated by Norsk Underholdningsspill AS, a part of the Olav Thon Group of companies. Norsk Underholdningsspill AS is also owner of the technology patent and the IPR of the concept.

Norsk Pantelotteri AS has currently licensed the concept to:

PARPA Finland Oy – for the jurisdiction of Finland
Danish Red Cross – for the jurisdiction of Denmark
Svensk Pantlotteri AB – for the jurisdiction of Sweden
